Golconda, Ill.

Allen William Brickhaus, 66, of Golconda, Ill. passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Hardin County Hospital in Rosiclare, Ill.

He was born March 26, 1947 in Cape Girardeau, the son of the late Walter and Mildred (Ochs) Brickhaus. Allen married Kathy Ashford on Aug. 23, 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Brickhaus of Golconda, Ill.; sister, Margaret Brickhaus of Jackson; brother, Glen (Marilyn) Brickhaus of Chester, Ill.; two nieces, Sasha Dammrich and Katia Brickhaus; son, James (Michele) Ketten.

Allen was a devoted Lutheran and member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Paducah, KY.  

He studied vocal and instrumental music at Southeast Missouri State University where he earned both a bachelors and masters degree.  He served his country as an E-5/SGT Trombone player and repair NCO from January 1972-January 1974 in the 82nd United States Army Band at Stuttgart, Germany - Kelley Barracks. He taught band and choir at Pope County High School from 1974-1997 and at Massac County High School from 1997-2003. He retired in 2003 but continued to substitute teach at many area schools. He was able to combine his love of teaching and flying model airplanes when he formed the Patton Street Pirate Pilots, a group of local kids he was instructing in model airplane construction and flight. He was the owner of Sixbits, his loud and proud 55’ Chevy he had purchased for a mere 35 dollars when he was in college. He spent most of his spare time restoring his pride and joy. He loved to sing. He sang with the SIC Choir, GMT Community Choir, and the Men’s Choir and Chamber Choir at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was a gifted and prolific writer. He wrote numerous model airplane articles, and he even ventured into fiction, penning two short stories, “Mystic Ring” and “Full Circle.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Brickhaus.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014 at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville, Ill. from 5-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Perryville.
